Scarsdale traces its roots back to Colonial times. In 1702, the "Lordship and Manor of Scarsdale" was granted to Caleb Heathcote by edict of King William 111. The exquisite architecture is reminiscent of its English roots, making Scarsdale a community of classics. Shopping is pleasant in the village area with quaint storefronts and a supermarket. In addition, Scarsdale's proximity to Eastchester and White Plains puts The Westchester and branches of many New York department stores within reach. Both the Bronx River Parkway and the Hutchinson River Parkway are nearby, giving a 35-minute access to New York's La Guardia and JFK International Airports. The Harlem Division of the Metro-North services Scarsdale with a 32-minute commute to Manhattan.
Scarsdale residents have enjoyed success in many fields. James Fenimore Cooper, mentioned earlier, wrote The Spy. Daniel D. Tompkins, five times Governor of New York(1807-1815) and twice Vice President of the United States, was born here. Other Scarsdale residents include distinguished scholars and artists, university presidents, a Nobel prize winner, state senators, members of Presidential cabinets, an astronaut, a New York State Commissioner of Education and presidents of large corporations. Many residents have given and continue to give their time and talents to serve Scarsdale by accepting positions as Mayor, Village and School Board members and as leaders of over 80 organizations.
